2018 Beef Cup Champion Declared

Beef Cup Champion Declared as Exhibition Baseball League and BEEF Finish with a Homerun Season

PIERRE, SD - It was a winning season for BEEF and baseball! A partnership between the South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC), the beef checkoff, and the Exhibition baseball league provided opportunities for multiple promotions across the state this summer.

SDBIC Executive Director Suzy Geppert stated, "We wanted to expand on the value of beef, and this partnership was a great way to do just that." Geppert says the league provided the perfect venue to expand messaging of beef's role as a power protein and helped continue to build the bridge from pasture to plate and engage with consumers at the community level.

The Pierre Trappers, the Hub City Hotshots of Aberdeen, and the Spearfish Sasquatch competed for the Beef Cup throughout the summer. During Beef Cup games, athletes and fans learned about the many benefits associated with the high-quality protein. All three teams hosted a special beef night during the season, where attendees had the opportunity to visit with area farmers and ranchers as well as the SDBIC producer and staff team. They received chances to win beef merchandise, beef certificates, and other prizes.

The Pierre Trappers clinched the season as the official Beef Cup champions with an overall Beef Cup record of 17-8. Trappers head coach Tanner Neale was proud of his team's accomplishment. "Once our players were introduced to the idea of the Beef Cup trophy they really rallied around it. I'm proud of how they approached our Beef Cup games, as it carried an additional motivation factor," Neale said. "Being born in South Dakota, it means a lot to me knowing that our team will go down as the first winners of the Beef Cup in its history."

"I want to thank the South Dakota Beef Industry Council and South Dakota beef producers for allowing our team to chase this achievement, as well as all they do for the Expedition League," Neale continued. "Watching our guys celebrate after the last out clinching the Cup is why I got into coaching. I can't wait to return to Hyde Stadium and the City of Pierre to see the Beef Cup where it belongs."

All stadiums during the Beef Cup chase sported the #PoweredByBeef and #BeefItsWhatsForDinner hashtags on outfield banners and signage, expanding reach beyond the league and providing opportunity for baseball enthusiasts to engage and learn more about the product and the industry.
