Food Safety Tips for the Holidays 


The holidays are here! Many will be cooking multiple meals, and some will be hosting for the first time.  Make the most of your time in the kitchen and remember to choose beef for its ease of preparation and its delicious, satisfying taste. Here are some great food safety tips to keep in mind this holiday season when you are preparing food.  

Clean: 

Before handing and preparing foods always wash hands with soap and warm water for a minimum of 20 seconds.  Wash all preparations surfaces frequently with hot soapy water. 


Separate:  

Raw meat and other raw animal proteins should be prepared on separate surfaces from ready-to-eat foods like vegetables and bread.  


Cook:  

Use an instant-read meat thermometer when cooking beef.  Look for the following temperatures to ensure doneness.

Ground beef: 160°F 

Beef steaks and roast:  

145°F medium rare 

160°F medium  

165°F well done  

Reheat temperature 165°F  


Serving & Storing:  

Hot food must be kept at or above 140°F  

Cold food must be kept at or below 40°F  

Perishable food should be refrigerated or frozen within two hours of purchase or preparation and within one hour if the temperature is above 90°F.
