Registration Open for 2017 Team BEEF Season

PIERRE, SD - Registration is open for the 2017 Team BEEF South Dakota race season. This is the sixth season for the program in which the South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) works with athletes who believe in the power of protein found in beef.

"Team BEEF has really grown into a great family of runners who recognize the nutritional benefits of lean beef, and the role such a high-quality protein plays in their training," said Holly Swee, Director of Nutrition and Consumer Information. Swee is also a runner and serves as the program's team captain.

New to the program this year - the official addition of cyclists to the team. "We've had several requests, and we are pleased this season to offer cyclists the same program benefits as our runners." Swee said.

About 100 runners participated in Team BEEF South Dakota last season. They sport red Team BEEF South Dakota jerseys and can be found racing through not only several South Dakota events each year, but also races like the Boston Marathon. Team members are quick to credit beef for giving them the fuel, and the power to cross the finish line.

"You can't train without adequate nutrition," Daniel Scholl said. "Lean protein builds muscle."

Scholl and his wife, Nancy, who has completed the Boston Marathon, live in Brookings, S.D. where he works as the interim dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences at South Dakota State University. 2016 was their first year running for Team BEEF.

"The iron (from lean beef) is very important in keeping your hemoglobin up," Nancy Scholl said.
