Pierre, SD – The South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) spent Monday April 25, 2022 working alongside Black Hills State University (BHSU) coaches. University athletes were given the opportunity to learn more about the Build Your Base program and the benefits of high-quality protein in an active lifestyle through hands on demonstrations. BHSU athletics has been a member of the Build Your Base program since 2020, and have used the program to increase athletic performance and maintain a healthful lifestyle by incorporating BEEF into their training.
Athletes from BHSU and SDBIC staff came together to talk about several beef topics including easy meal prep, creating batch meals, grilling, and creating easy beef freezer meals that are ready to cook on busy days. Athletes were also educated on how to make sure their protein intake and timing of consumption helps in achieving maximum protein benefits. Athletes discovered methods in which to determine the right amounts of beef for optimal effect in the maintaining, building and repairing of muscle.
BHSU Athletic Performance Co-Director, Derek Van Blarcom was excited about the event and its outcome. "The build your base program is instrumental for the nutritional and performance success of our student athletes at BHSU. High quality beef protein, combined with the educational resources have helped bridge the gap between our training and body composition goals we have for our student athletes. We can't thank them enough for their support and how much they've helped move our athletic program forward."
SDBIC Director of Nutrition, Holly Swee explains the importance of these Build Your Base events, “Build Your Base education events like this aim to teach student athletes about beef’s nutritional benefits in a balanced diet. They also provide athletes opportunity to learn cooking and meal planning techniques that can encompass a variety of beef cuts. Our goal is to bring the beef recipes and meal preparation techniques to life and allow the students the opportunity to learn, taste and see. The experience helps the students become more familiar with various beef products and aids in their confidence with meal preparation. “
Van Blarcom expanded. "The Build Your Base event on Monday evening was a huge success. The feedback from our student athletes was incredible. I heard from multiple student athletes that this was an extremely beneficial event where they learned about multiple aspects of nutrition and meal prep. The skills they learned will be extremely beneficial for them to make the right food decisions and help them with meal preparation, especially for those student athletes who live off campus."
